Why Cork?
The cork oak tree, scientifically known as Quercus Suber, is the only tree of its kind where the outer bark can be safely removed every 8 to 10 years without damaging the tree itself. In fact, removing the outer bark helps the tree better process carbon dioxide and provide more oxygen.
Cork oak forests absorb CO2 and are a major provider of oxygen for our planet. Maintained by local families and farmers in Portugal, they are a critical sources of income to the locals. These families and farmers help to care for the forests, keeping the trees healthy and the process sustainable.
Cork Oak forests hold one of the world’s highest amount biodiversity among the forests and is home to some of the worlds endangered species such as the Barbary Deer, the Iberian Imperial Eagle, and the Iberian Lynx.
Did you know?
In the cellular walls of cork tissue there is a waxy substance known as Suberin, which renders cork impervious to moisture. This keeps the traction between the cork and your skin, giving cork its ultra non-slip attributes, and making cork yoga mats perfect for hot yoga and vigorous practice. The Suberin in cork also gives it antimicrobial properties. Suberin naturally repels small organisms, making cork resistant to the growth of bacterias, fungus and mold. This also reduces the build-up of unpleasant odors and helps to keep the surface of your mat fresh.
